Free Choice Electives

Selecting a Free-Choice Module

MTU wishes you to take ownership of your own learning. The free choice module is a reserved one module place in each semester where you, the learner, can decide what you would like to study. Many of you may wish to choose an elective module offered by your department as your free choice but some of you may wish to choose an alternative module to develop skills and interests outside your main area of study.

In theory, you can choose any module as your free choice but there might be restrictions. You may need prior learning to successfully complete the module or it might be a module that is too similar to a module that is part of your programme.  Check with your Head of Department as to the suitability of the module for your programme. You should also check your timetable – modules on your programme may clash with the delivery times of modules on another programme.

To guarantee the availability of some modules to our learners, a large selection of elective modules will be delivered in specific timeslots. Only these modules are scheduled to be delivered at these times – and you should be able to select them as your free-choice module without timetable clashes:

Tuesday 12:00 – 13:00
Wednesday 14:00 – 18:00
Thursday 14:00 – 15:00
Friday 12:00 – 13:00

Prior to finally selecting a module, you may wish to talk to the Module Coordinator of the module with regard to availability of module places, module timetable etc.

A list of modules will be submitted by Module Coordinators as being available as free-choice modules for the academic year. However, if there are not enough students registered for a module it may not run.

Go to Web4student to check the modules for which you are enrolled. Add any missing modules (get the CRN from your lecturer).
