Examination Supports for Students with Disabilities or Medical Conditions

Registering for exam supports:

If you have a disability or medical condition which means you need examination supports such as a reader, scribe, laptop, sign language interpreter, separate room or extra time you must register first with:

  • Laura O'Rourke, Disability Support Officer, in the Access Service, Student Centre, Bishopstown, email: disability@cit.ie or telephone 021 433 5107 (direct) or 021 433 5138 (Access Service).

Full registration with the Disability Support Service includes providing evidence of your disability or medical condition and attending a needs assessment with the Disability Support Officer. For more information see the Disability Support Service website: http://www.cit.ie/studentlife/access_disability/disabilities/

Laura O'Rourke will confirm with the Examinations Office which supports you are entitled to in your exams. The Examinations Office will then contact you nearer to exam time. You can contact Examinations Office by email: examsmgt@cit.ie or telephone 021 433 5090 /5049.

You need to register with the Disability Support Officer for exam supports well in advance of your examinations (at least six weeks before the start of the exams) so we can arrange the supports for your exams. If you are in a separate exam centre the details of this room will appear on your individual online examination timetable.

Deadlines for requesting exam supports for end of semester 2016/17 exams:

You need to fully register with the Disability Support Officer by these dates in order to receive exam supports:

  • Semester 1 exams: by Friday 28th October 2016
  • Semester 2 exams: by Friday 10th March 2017
  • August 2016 (repeat) exams: by Friday 7th July 2017

Requests after these dates may not be able to be accommodated.

Exam supports

The exam supports available in CIT include a reader, scribe, laptop, sign language interpreter, separate room or extra time / restbreaks.
Please read this document for an explanation of some of the supports available at CIT: Exam supports outline.pdf

Extra time letter: Students already registered with the Disability Support Service will receive their extra time letter (if eligible) in the post during Semester 1. Please keep the letter to use at all exams in the current academic year. If you lose the letter, please email examsmgt@cit.ie with your name and student number.

Repeat exams only students:

If you are a student returning to repeat an exam in either Semester 2 or an Autumn repeat, please contact Mary O'Sullivan at examsmgt@cit.ie  in the Exams Office to confirm what supports you need by the following dates:-

Semester 2:         31st March 2017

Autum Repeats    7th July 2017

In class assessment supports:

Many students do not request supports for their in class assessments as these can be quite short tests with only a small amount of reading or writing required. In most cases, the student lets their lecturer know they are entitled to extra time via their extra time letter. Once the lecturer has advance warning, they will organise the exam to allow for extra time.

If you feel you need the support of your reader or scribe for your assessment, then you must contact the Exams Office at least 6 working days before your assessment date. Where possible arrangements will be made for you, but at certain very busy times of the year, it may not be possible to accommodate all such requests.

Temporary injuries/Illnesses:

Students with injuries such as a broken hand or unexpected illness may wish to explore options such as extra time, rest break, a separate room, use of laptop or scribe. Some students may decide to defer their exams until they have recovered fully. If you find yourself in the above situation and you wish to avail of examination supports, you should email examsmgt@cit.ie immediately. You must provide medical evidence of your injury and your medical certificate will also need to state that you are fit to sit the exam. The medical certificate will also need to be handed into the Examinations Office, Melbourn Building for the attention of Mary O'Sullivan.

Please note provision of supports is dependent on your needs and the resources available. It may not be possible to provide accommodations at certain peak examination times, when resources are already fully utilised. You will also need to speak to your Department about your situation as your continuous assessments may also be affected.

Apprentices:

Apprentices looking for exam supports such as a reader, scribe extra time or separate room must fill out a registration form and send this with documentation to with Laura O'Rourke, Disability Support Officer, in the Access Service, Student Centre, Bishopstown, email: disability@cit.ie or telephone 021 433 5107 (direct) or 021 433 5138 (Access Service).
