Google Books and Scholar

At the top left of the Google Advanced or Google Standard Search interfaces, you will see the list of options:

Two of these are especially interesting for academic research: Books and Scholar. Both of these only search specific sources and you won't be pestered by advertisements or dubious sites.

Google Books: If you want, you can search specifically for books within Google, using the normal terms you have. But note that Google Books is not comprehensive – rather it only lists books that have signed up for this service. You may be given full text of these books, but often you will just be given certain sections.

Google Scholar: This is a very useful feature of Google as it provides a very large database of academic resources that can be searched comprehensively.

Even if the full text of the hits cannot be accessed directly through Google, they may be available on one or more of the CIT Library Online Database (see above).

Also, you can get the full bibliographic details from Google Scholar and you may be able to access the paper or article elsewhere (in print or from another library) now that you know of it and have the full details.

Finally, you will notice on the right hand site of the results where there is a PDF version of a document from your hit so that that you can download the full document.

Activity:
Carry out the same detailed search on Web, Books and Scholar and compare the top 10 results. Which is best? (Answer: a combination of all three.)
