Glossary

  • Plagiarism
  • Copying of another's work and presenting it as your own.

  • Pre-requisite
  • A module that must be taken prior to enrolment on another module.

  • PhD
  • Doctor of Philosophy degree, at Level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications (http://www.nfq.ie).

  • Pass/Fail
  • Grading convention that evaluates student class performance based on whether they pass or fail, instead of on a number or letter scale.

  • Progression rules
  • Set of rules that define conditions for learners’ progression within qualifications and towards other qualifications.

  • Provider
  • A ‘provider of a programme of education and training’ is a person
    who, or body which, provides, organises or procures a programme of
    education and training.

  • Programme
  • A programme is an approved course of study, the successful completion of which leads to an Institute award (higher certificate or degree). The award is made when the required number of credits has been successfully accumulated, at appropriate levels, from approved modules.

  • Programme Specification
  • The programme outcomes, curriculum and credit requirements of a programme will be formally outlined in a programme specification presented in the form required by the Institute. This should address:

    • The purpose of the programme
    • The overall programme learning outcomes
    • How credit may be accumulated to achieve the award
    • Entry requirements
    • Further educational opportunities that may arise during or upon completion of the programme
    • The team responsible for co-ordinating and managing the programme
    • The mechanisms by which the quality of the programme is monitored and improved
  • Progression
  • Progression is defined as the progress of a student from one stage to another within a programme.

  • Programme Progression and Awards Board (PAB)
  • There will be a PAB for each stage of a programme. This PAB will decide on issues to do with progression and awards but may not change the marks allocated by a MEB. The dates of meetings of PABs shall be decided annually by the Institute.

  • Pass By Compensation
  • Compensation to pass a stage shall be applied only to module results being presented to the current sitting of the PAB. The volume of credit that may be compensated at a sitting is given in the Marks & Standards document.

     

  • Parchment
  • Issued by CIT to testify that the holder has successfully completed a particular course of study and to confer an academic award (i.e. Higher Certificate, Bachelor Degree, Honours Bachelor Degree, Master’s Degree etc.)
