Building Social Connections- 5 credit Single Subject Certificate
MTU Cork Campus Service in collaboration with MTU School of Humanities, launched a new 5 credit single subject certificate, 'Building Social Connections'- a free 12 week programme starting in February 2024.
This certificate was designed with the learner in mind, to provide students with an understanding of social connections and developing relationships as well as giving students a taste of what higher education is like but in a community environment. The module:
- Examined the importance and benefits of social connection in human life and theories to support this.
- Examined the significance of relationships, as well as types of stress and responses to stress and when stress can become toxic.
- Explored effective strategies to prioritise self-care as a foundational step before extending care to others.

- Holistic Development
- Neuro-informed approach
- Stress
- Reflection and Self-Care
Additional Information:
- FREE- no fees
- Delivered by MTU lecturing staff, with introduction by MTU Access Service staff
- Delivered in a community setting
- 12 weeks: Feb- May 2024 (One 3 hour session weekly)
- Small class size- limited places
- No classes during midterm or Easter.
Applications were welcomed from learners of all ages and in particular from the following cohorts;
- Socio-economically disadvantaged communities
- Socio-economic groups that have low participation rates in higher education
- Students with a disability
- Students with experience of care
- Students who are carers
- Lone and/or teen parents
- Members of the Irish Traveller Community
- Members of the Roma Community
- Mature Students
- Students from ethnic minorities
- Students with experience of the criminal justice system
